Growth & Expansion

New markets, second locations, and how to pay for them.

"Liberty" from army plane, Bain News Service, c. 1920. Library of Congress (public domain).

Lady Liberty crossed the Atlantic in 350 pieces packed in 214 crates, and she went up only after a pedestal was built strong enough to carry her. We help you grow the same way: new markets, new locations, and new lines of business, with the foundation funded and staffed before you leap.

Grow on a Foundation That Can Carry the Weight

Growth is the goal of almost every owner we meet, and it is also the most common way a healthy company gets into trouble. A second location that drains the first. A new product line that pulls the best people off the work that pays the bills. A big new customer whose payment terms strain cash for a year. None of these are bad ideas. They just need the foundation built first.

Questions to Answer Before You Expand

  • Is the core business profitable and running well without the owner’s constant attention?
  • Is there real demand in the new market, and who already serves it?
  • How much will the expansion cost, how long until it pays for itself, and where will the money come from?
  • Who will run it? Do you have that person today?
  • What happens to the existing business if the new venture takes longer than planned?

We work through these questions with you before the lease is signed or the first hire is made.

Ways to Grow, and How We Help With Each

New markets and second locations. We study the demand, the competition, and the cost of entry for a new city or region, then build a realistic forecast for the first two to three years. You see the best case, the expected case, and the slow case before you decide.

New products and services. We look at what your current customers already ask for, what it would take to deliver it well, and whether it fits the business you want to run.

Acquisitions and partnerships. Buying a competitor or joining forces with a partner can be the fastest way to grow. We help you evaluate the fit, the numbers, and the people, and we work alongside your attorney and CPA on the deal.

Franchising and licensing. For owners with a proven model, we assess whether it can be repeated by others and what systems would need to be in place.

Capital and People: The Two Things Growth Always Needs

Every expansion needs money and people, usually more of both than first expected. We help you plan the capital: how much is needed, when, and which options make sense, from reinvested profit to outside partners. We also lay out the hiring plan and the new organization chart, so you know which roles to fill first and who will report to whom when the company is twice its size.

How an Engagement Works

Growth work is usually done on a monthly retainer, because expansion takes months, not weeks. We start with a review of the current business to confirm it is ready, then build the growth plan and stay involved as it is carried out: checking results against the forecast, adjusting when the market surprises us, and keeping the core business healthy along the way.

What You Walk Away With

A written growth plan with a market assessment, a two-to-three-year forecast, a capital plan, a hiring plan, and clear decision points where you can pause or change course. The Statue of Liberty did not go up until her pedestal was ready. Your next stage should not either.

What the Job Includes

  • Market entry and second-location feasibility
  • New product and service line planning
  • Capital planning and funding options for growth
  • Hiring and org-chart plan for the next stage
  • Partnership, acquisition, and franchise evaluation
Who it's for

Profitable companies ready for the next stage, and owners weighing a new market or an acquisition.
